Dezan Shira & Associates’ ASEAN Director Marco Förster and Senior Associate Dan Martin met with representatives of the Australian Embassy and Austrade in Hanoi, including Dale Brearley, First Secretary Investment at the Australian Embassy; Joel Smouha, Trade and Investment Commissioner at Austrade; Hoa Nguyen, Senior Investment Director at Austrade; and Phuong Nguyen, Investment Officer at the Australian Embassy.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the evolving Vietnam-Australia economic relationship and to share updates on the priorities of the Embassy and Austrade. Discussions touched broadly on areas of cooperation, sectoral opportunities, and ways to enhance the support framework for Australian businesses in Vietnam. Both sides also considered how current global and regional developments may shape trade and investment ties in the years ahead.

Commenting on the engagement, ASEAN Director Marco Förster noted, “It is important for us to understand where diplomatic and trade partners are placing their focus. These dialogues help ensure we can align our support with the wider direction of bilateral cooperation.”

Senior Associate Dan Martin added, “Hearing directly from Austrade and the Embassy helps us see how high-level priorities connect with the realities of doing business in Vietnam. That perspective is valuable for understanding both opportunities and challenges as they emerge.

This engagement reflects Dezan Shira & Associates’ role, working with our local teams and a dedicated Australian-New Zealand Desk in supporting the Australian Government’s investment facilitation efforts under the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy and the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. By aligning with these priorities, we help Australian firms pursue opportunities in Vietnam and the wider region with AusTrade’s Investment Deals Team.
