Ho Chi Minh City | Tuesday, July 29 – On the occasion of a market discovery tour in Vietnam by 25 delegates from the Chinese megacity of Tianjin, organized by Techcombank, Vietnam’s largest private bank, our Vietnam Country Director, Vivie Wei, delivered practical insights on the setup process and requirements in this favored market.

The delegation, organized by the Tianjin International Freight Forwarders & Logistics Supply Chain Association, stopped by in Ho Chi Minh City after having already viewed industrial zones and sites with investment potential, supported by the team of Techcombank Vietnam. The financial institution, serving private banking clients as well as large multinationals, including a fast-growing number of China ODI investors, has increased its capabilities to especially meet the demand from investors from the neighboring country.

For Dezan Shira & Associates, having been active in China with more than a dozen offices for over 30 years and three offices in Vietnam, this collaboration is therefore specifically meaningful.

Vivie Wei, herself a Chinese national who has been leading our almost 80-person-strong Vietnam team successfully over the past two years, underlines the tremendous opportunities for investment between both countries, yet also showcased potential challenges and differences in business culture and the overall regulatory environment. “Many first-time foreign investors, whether from Western countries or China itself, come to Vietnam with the assumption that they can more or less apply the same models and work mechanics in Vietnam as they are used to in mainland China. While similarities definitely exist in some ways, compliance, labor law, and also work culture are distinctly different, and I can only underline that for aspiring investors from China and elsewhere—do your homework, be prepared, be accurate, and be compliant from day one. Then you will be able to participate in Vietnam’s remarkable development,” Vivie Wei remarks.

We thank our partners from Techcombank Vietnam for the fantastic opportunity to not only share our expertise with the delegates but also exchange on the delegates’ impressions and aspirations in Vietnam.

Our team is looking forward to supporting more businesses with their journey to Vietnam. If you are interested in more information about doing business in Vietnam in Chinese language, please directly get in touch with our China ODI team.
