On February 13, 2025, a new income tax bill was introduced in India’s Lok Sabha (lower house of the parliament). The much-anticipated bill was first announced in 2024 during the previous year’s budget speech. India’s finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, highlighted that the updated income tax law (Income Tax Bill 2025) would be uncomplicated, transparent, and readily comprehensible.

A key aspect of the bill includes significant amendments to tax residency rules, set to take effect from April 1, 2026 . These amendments will directly impact Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and frequent visitors to India, introducing more stringent criteria for determining tax residency. Understanding these new rules along with monitoring residency status will be crucial to avoid unexpected tax liabilities in India.

On March 17, we organized an informative session where our experts Ankur Munjal, Country Director-India and Krishan Aggarwal, Operations Director-India  decoded the New Income Tax Bill 2025 and its impact on NRI and PIO businesses, as well as non-profit organizations. With these significant reforms, this webinar will provide valuable insights to NRIs, PIOs, and foreign businesses, helping them make informed financial decisions and ensure compliance with Indian tax laws.

Key topics covered during the session:

  • Introduction to the New Income Tax Bill 2025
  • Personal Taxation & New Residency Rules for Non-Resident Individuals
