How to choose company name for setting up a company in Hong Kong?

Posted On January 2014

Normally, as many would say, the first step to setting up a company in Hong Kong is to choose a company name. All these company names can be found in the Companies Registry. The chosen company name cannot be any name that is already existent in the Registry (which can be searched online free of charge), that is misleading as to the activities of the company, that may cause threat to public safety or that infringes third-party intellectual property in Hong Kong or elsewhere. The Company Registrar has the power to order changes when it thinks fit.

The company name can be in English or traditional Chinese or both. However, a name that mixes Chinese characters and English alphabets is not allowed. Also, the suffix, in Chinese or English, so long as to the equivalent effect, of “limited company” should be inserted at the end of the company name, save from those which are exempted, such as “Trust” or “Chamber of Commerce”.
