Chris Devonshire-Ellis è il fondatore della società. In passato ha lavorato con Asia Law & Practice a Hong Kong, con Ng & Shum, una società di consulenza legale a Hong Kong e presso la società legale internazionale Mossack Fonseca & Co. Chris Devonshire-Ellis ha costituito Dezan Shira & Associates nel 1992 e ha sviluppato lo studio dalla sua base originaria nella Cina meridionale fino a raggiungere i livelli di oggi - è una società riconosciuta a livello internazionale che opera in Cina, Hong Kong, India e Vietnam. Lui rimane il Senior Partner dello studio, anche se oggi ha responsabilità specifiche per quanto riguarda lo sviluppo dello studio in India e inoltre presiede il consiglio dei partner internazionali. Si divide tra Delhi e Pechino.

Chris Devonshire-Ellis ha anche costituito la casa editrice Asia Briefing Ltd nel 1999, che adesso pubblica diverse testate in varie lingue, come ad es. China Briefing, India Briefing, Vietnam Briefing, 2point6billion e diverse altre riviste più piccole, inclusa una selezione di testate culturali e orientate verso viaggi regionali. Asia Briefing produce cinque diverse riviste mensili e ha pubblicato oltre 50 libri diversi sulle questioni legali e fiscali dell'investimento diretto estero.

Negli ultimi sei anni, ha lavorato come columnist per la prestigiosa rivista Beijing Review, fondata dal Presidente Mao 50 anni fa ed è la rivista del Governo cinese con le informazioni sul business. I suoi commenti appaiono regolarmente sulle pubblicazioni internazionali quali The Economist, Time, Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The South China Morning Post, China Daily, The Hindu Times, The Times of India, Shanghai Daily e in una moltitudine di altre pubblicazioni conosciute a livello internazionale.

È molto richiesto come oratore a livello internazionale ed è membro del Royal Overseas League, del Young Presidents Organization, del China Exploration and Research Society, del Capital Club e degli American Club a Pechino.
