When starting operations in India, one of the first issues to address is the registration of your trademark in India, which is a relatively low-cost and simple procedure.
While India is not yet a signatory to the Madrid Agreement (which standardizes international trademark and patent processes and claims between the member countries), the country has indicated that it intends to join it. Despite this intention, it is still necessary to register your mark in India to cover it through the Indian protocol. This requires several filing procedures by licensed Indian trademark lawyers, and takes about 12 months from commencement.
